Three Pillars of Sustainability

Sustainable communities value the importance of economic, environmental, and community social needs equally.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing, which in turn depends on the wellbeing of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resoures.

  1. Hi Michele!

Under the social pillar of the Unity Plan, I believe that it is important that we support two relatively new groups in town: People First and People for Inclusive Communities.

The former has been around longer and is for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They hope to gain momentum from an excellent, free-admission event in Partner's Hall on March 24. Please RSVP to lkahler@clhuntsville.ca as space is limited. The morning session (10-12) is of general interest to all: The afternoon session (2-5) is for individuals who wish to become more involved with the group as advisors, trainers, executive etc.

The latter group has had exactly one open house and one meeting, so support is essential now, as with any fledgling organization. The initial thrust will be toward the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the mainstream of society. The future will see efforts to include any and all groups who feel isolated by poverty, ethnicity, ageism etc.

To deserve our reputation as a welcomimg and caring community, such initiatives should not be allowed to languish.

    Best,

    Doug Millman

I promise...no more posts until at least April...my apologies. I have a proposal for a truncated "Vision Statement" just waiting for your bouquets or brickbats. (BTW, I consider recreation to be an integral component of culture.)

Huntsville is committed to developing an innovative economy; celebrating our arts, culture and rural heritage; and promoting a progressive environmental policy.

    I know...enough already.

  3. Thanks Doug! I know that representatives from People First and People for Inclusive Communities have been to at least one of the Communtity Forums.. and have been on the stakeholder list since the beginning of the project. Your comments on the vision have been noted and documented.

    Thanks,
    The Lura Team
